Poly-Viscose vs Cotton Trousers for School Uniforms: Which Lasts Longer?

Trousers and skirts take more wear than any other uniform garment. Students sit, kneel, run and climb in them every day. Choosing the right fabric decides whether they look sharp in March or shiny and baggy by December.

Poly-viscose (PV) blends

PV suiting is the most common choice for school bottoms in India, usually in blends such as 65/35 or 70/30 polyester to viscose.

  • Durability: the polyester gives strength and abrasion resistance at the seat and knees.
  • Crease retention: pleats and trouser creases hold well through repeated washes.
  • Drape: viscose softens the hand and drape compared with pure polyester.
  • Limitation: breathes less than cotton, and lower-grade blends can turn shiny with heavy pressing.

Cotton and cotton-rich drills

  • Comfort: breathable and cool, a real advantage in hot classrooms.
  • Limitation: creases quickly, can shrink and fade if not pre-treated, and wears thinner at stress points.

Which one should your school choose?

For most schools, a good-quality PV blend is the practical default for trousers and skirts, because bottoms need strength more than breathability. Cotton or cotton-rich fabrics make more sense for shirts, where comfort matters most. Read more in our guide on the best fabric for school uniforms.

What to check in a sample

  • Fabric weight (see our GSM guide)
  • Colour consistency across lots
  • Seam strength at the seat and crotch
  • Shine after several press cycles

Frequently asked questions

Are PV trousers too warm for summer?

A lighter-weight PV with a good weave is comfortable for most of the year. Some schools in very hot regions choose lighter summer bottoms.

How do we avoid shine?

Choose a better-grade blend and advise parents to iron on the reverse side or with a pressing cloth.
