Colour Fastness in School Uniforms: Why Navy Turns Grey and How to Prevent It

A school uniform only looks like a uniform when every student’s colour matches. Faded navy trousers next to new ones, or a maroon blazer that has turned brown, quickly make a premium school look careless. The cause is usually poor colour fastness.

What colour fastness means

Colour fastness is how well a fabric holds its dye when it is washed, rubbed, exposed to sunlight or sweated in. A fabric can do well on one test and badly on another, so ask about each one.

The tests that matter for uniforms

  • Washing: does the colour fade or bleed after repeated washes?
  • Rubbing: does dye transfer onto skin, white shirts or school bags?
  • Light: does the fabric fade in sunlight during outdoor assemblies and sports?
  • Perspiration: important for sportswear and summer shirts.

Fastness is graded on a standard scale, where higher grades mean better performance. Ask suppliers for test results on the actual fabric lot.

Why dark colours are hardest

Navy, black, maroon and bottle green use more dye, so there is more to lose. These are also the most popular uniform colours, which is why fading is so common.

How schools can protect colour

  • Ask for fastness test reports before approving fabric.
  • Approve a colour standard and check new lots against it.
  • Give parents simple care advice: cold or warm wash, inside out, dry in shade.

Frequently asked questions

Why do reorders sometimes look different?

Different dye lots can vary slightly. A supplier who checks lots against an approved standard keeps this under control.

Can fading be reversed?

Not really. Prevention through better fabric and care is the only reliable fix.
